My Library Career

My library career began as a public librarian with the National Library Board of Singapore. I moved into academic librarianship with NTU Singapore and found the work most satisfying.

Lead (Resources, Discovery & Access), Office of Information, Knowledge and Library Services, Nanyang Technological University Library

Oversee the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the acquisition, renewal, management, availability and usage analysis of library resources (print and electronic). Responsible for budget control, financial governance, negotiations and strategies.  

Head (Art, Design & Media Library) & Senior Assistant Director (New Media Group), Nanyang Technological University Library

Responsible for the management and development of the Art, Design & Media Library (ADML) operations and collections so that the information needs of academic staff and students are supported with quality resources, user-centred services, and facilities.  

Explore, apply and advocate the use of emerging technologies to help users leverage on and exploit the full benefits of social media and mobile resources for learning and research, knowledge sharing and community building.

Assistant Director (Services Development) & Subject Librarian (Communication Studies), Nanyang Technological University Library

Plan and coordinate the implementation of new multi-division initiatives in library and information services that support our users’ research and learning activities. Plan and roll out policies and programmes that support the improved performance of library staff.  

Responsible for developing and maintaining critical information resources that are relevant to the learning, teaching and research activities of target user groups. Provide timely guidance and advisory services so that users are more aware of available resources and are able to find and access these resources more proficiently. Cultivate and maintain a close working relationship with user groups through regular user-oriented activities such as training, orientation, meetings and events.

Senior Librarian (Library Promotion) & Subject Librarian (Communication Studies), Nanyang Technological University Library

Promote the resources, tools and people in the Library to the NTU community. The work involves planning and implementing activities to increase awareness of resources and create buzz for the library.

Project Librarian, Department of Justice, Victoria, Australia

Setting up a collection of legal reference materials for the Legal Policy Unit. The unit is responsible for drafting and monitoring legislation for the State of Victoria. Tasks include the organisation and indexing of existing materials, disposal of unnecessary materials, and creation of an electronic catalogue for easier retrieval and new additions, and staff training.

Information officer, National Library Board Singapore

Circulation Duties: Maintaining collections (mandarin, audiovisual and youth)  

Administrative Duties: Conducting staff training for new Y2K compliant Library system (Carl Circulation), new officer training and regular refresher courses such as customer service, library policies, and electronic services Supervising a team of library officers and assistants. This includes counselling, coaching, conducting performance appraisal, and assessing training needs  

Public Relations Duties: Dealing with suggestions, complaints and problems, offering solutions, and organizing replies. Planning, organizing and hosting activities such as workshops, talks and storytelling Providing reference and circulation services  

Special Duties:

  1. Project manager. Plan and Execute Reading Competition 2000.
  2. Chinese Liaison Officer. Promote mandarin collections through participation in exhibitions, competitions, book fairs and workshops. Conduct training for the web catalogue in mandarin,
  3. Student Virtual Community project team member. Testing and promotion for an educational website for students. Activities include roadshows, school talks, and demonstrations.
  4. Part-time trainer for National Library Board Institute (NLBI). Subject areas: Information Literacy and Project Skills.
  5. Service Standards Officer. Draft and present service standards for audio-visual work processes.
  6. Project Manager, partial library upgrade. Draw up specifications for new furniture and upgrading works, liaise with vendors, test equipment and monitor progress.
