Lyrics for Finished

Surely as the dawn awakes
Your love for me will never fade
Relentless love pursued my soul
Till condemnation lost its hold

You took my sin
The just for the unjust
You made me Yours
Through Your redeeming blood

No other works can qualify
You paid in full salvation’s price
I’m given life by nail-scarred hands
To worship You with all I am

You took my sin
The just for the unjust
You made me Yours
Through Your redeeming blood

Conquered death
Reversing every curse
You broke the chains
You tore the veil
Glorious King
The name above all names
You paid in full
You rose to reign

Everything gained I count loss
In the light of the cross
Every demand made You paid
With the stripes that You bore
You are all I need
You are all I need

What does “It is finished!” mean?

The inspiration for this song came from a sentence uttered by Jesus Christ as he hung on the Cross.

28 After this, Jesus, ]knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:28-30)

What did Jesus mean by “It is finished!”

What is finished?

Tetelestai is an accounting term that means “paid in full.” From Romans 3:23-25, we know that mankind owed God a sin debt. That was the debt that Jesus paid in full.

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified [afreely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness (Romans 3:23-25)

Okay, my sin debt to God has been paid by Jesus. What does that mean for me?

It means I don’t have to pay it anymore because I am no longer short of the glory of God. I am the righteousness of God in Christ. I don’t have to work for my fellowship with God. The enemy can no longer accuse me of wrong-doings. And if I falter, I can run straight to God for comfort and not condemnation. There is hope.
