This Murders in the Rue Morgue Playlist consists of 3 full-length movies from 1932 to 1986.
The Murders in the Rue Morgue is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in Graham’s Magazine in 1841. It has been described as the first modern detective story. It is distinguished as one of the earliest to introduce deductive reasoning and an eccentric but brilliant “detective”.
Although the story is a little dark and gory, it isn’t that scary, by modern standards. I looked into it because of the claim that it is the first modern detective story rather than the horror angle.
This story is set in Paris. The bizarre murders of a mother and daughter with conflicting witness accounts were solved by the brilliant C. Auguste Dupin through deductive reasoning.
This playlist is made up of 3 full-length films that are loosely based on the story itself. None of them used the right animal. I think because the story is a short one, all the screenwriters felt they have to add a lot of horror and drama to it to lengthen it. The last film is possibly the closest to the written story.
1932 – Murders in the Rue Morgue
A very loose adaptation. The film is about Dr Mirakle, a carnival entertainer who was kidnapping Parisian prostitutes to mix their blood with that of his pet gorilla. He thought his experiments failed because of the quality of the victims’ blood. So, he kidnapped a beautiful girl and killed her mother.
1954 – Phantom of the Rue Morgue
A string of strange murders happened in the Rue Morgue in the 1870s. It was related to Professor Marais who was involved in bizarre dangerous animal experiments.
1986 – Murders in the Rue Morgue
The mysterious and grisly murders of a mother and daughter leave police investigators puzzled. Few clues were left behind. The killer could not have fled via the windows as they were nailed shut. Nor was the killer observed leaving by neighbors.
