The words were penned by Edward Mote who lived from 1797 to 1874. He was a carpenter before becoming a pastor. It was said that he wrote this hymn in a single day while walking to work.
He sang it for the wife of a friend who is sick. She enjoyed it very much. Mote was pleased that she found comfort in his verses and had it printed for distribution among his friends.
The verses were originally titled “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less“. It was later sung to a melody written by William Bradbury (1816–1868) called The Solid Rock. The match was very popular and the hymn came to be known as The Solid Rock.
